Vanilla Muscat (バニラ・マスカット, Banira Masukatto) is one of the main protagonists in Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2. She is the daughter of the president of Gasco, Shayne Muscat, and the younger sister of Cannelle Muscat. She gives access to Malt Marzipan and his friends to the captured Berman supertank Tarascus to pursue the Taranis on its rampage across Pharaoh after kidnapping half of their friends. Despite the warnings from Malt, she sneaks on board with them and joins the crew in their chase for the rogue tank.

Physical Appearance

Vanilla Muscat is a slender girl with wavy white blonde hair. She has grey fur and a long thin tail, with intense light blue eyes of a characteristic positive canthal tilt. She has bangs swept to the side, and two medium sidelocks. Her hair is tailbone length, and tied into two braids past her shoulders. She has a small ahoge on the opposite side of her bangs.

In Fuga 2 Vanilla is wearing a red jacket with white ornamentation and frilled cuffs, a white and gold belt around her waist, high waisted light brown pants, brown boots and pale orange gloves, as well as golden earring pendants. She wears an indigo cravat with a green gemstone as an ornament. In some illustrations, she is shown to be wearing a white button-up shirt underneath. Her breed of Felineko is Russian Blue.

In Fuga 3 she's seen in a transmission screen wearing a black suit with a red scarf. She is also sporting a small black garrison cap with red highlights.

Personality

Vanilla is a determined and brave young girl with a stubborn yet self aware personality. She has great care for image and manners, although she can be hotheaded and rebellious. She is smart but somewhat naive, with a wide array of talents that range from cooking, reading, writing, and even dancing ballet. She was educated this way by her esteemed late tutor Cayenne Riesling, with whom she used to have a very close bond.

She admires her father greatly and strives to live up to his legacy. Even at a young age, she takes an interest in politics, aspiring to one day lead the country as its president, just as he did. Her admiration for leadership also extends to the legendary "the Hero of Gasco" whom she idolizes—until she finally meets him and is disappointed to find that he is, in her words, a "painfully normal boy."

Despite her outward confidence, Both her father and Cayenne described Vanilla as an anxious, difficult-to-handle, and overly emotional young girl in their respective journals. A mess struggling to meet the expectations set by her father and older sister. This perceived weakness led to her strict upbringing and extensive skillset, serving as a means to compensate for her emotional instability, a development they were ultimately both proud of.

Vanilla's distrust in others and her relentless desire to honor her father's legacy have been her downfall in many instances, leading to multiple sacrifices willingly made in the name of retribution. This is why, despite the initial friction between the two, she eventually forms a close bond with Malt, bonding over their grief. They both find solace in their understanding and company, sharing a strong sense of justice and a thirst for revenge against the ones responsible for their losses, leading to Vanilla coming to respect him as an unconventional leader, be it for his resolve or his compassion.

History

Early Life

Vanilla Muscat was born into an Anjalist Felineko household, the daughter of the successful pacifist politician Shayne Muscat and his wife, Jelly. She was the second daughter of the couple, with Canelle being sixteen years her senior. Due to their significant age gap and Cannelle’s service in the Gasco Army, Vanilla struggled to form a close bond with her sister.

She grew up in the capital city of Paresia, where her father eventually became president after winning the elections, making him the de facto leader of the Free Lands of Gasco. Despite coming from an affluent family, Shayne instilled in Vanilla the values of respect, duty, liberty, and justice, the pillars that once founded Gasco. She taught her to seek negotiation and understanding between people from all walks of life. His strong leadership and tenacity inspired the young girl to follow in his footsteps from a very young age.

A problem child

At the age of six, her father enlisted the help from his longtime friend, Cayenne Riesling, a teacher, scholar and once university colleague of Shayne, to tutor Vanilla, just as he had previously done with Cannelle. However, Vanilla soon proved to be a challenging student, untalented and undisciplined, unlike her accomplished adult sister. Her stubbornness and temperamental outbursts made Cayenne question whether he should even try to continue teaching her at all. Aware of his daughter's flaws, Shayne pleaded with Cayenne to continue teaching her regardless, which he reluctantly agreed to - but remarking the necessity of a stricter and far more extensive education.

Cayenne became an integral part of Vanilla's life, spending time with her daily, forming a strong mentor-student relationship, and due to his closeness with her parents, he became something of an uncle figure. Vanilla trained in tennis and track racing, studied literature, played the violin, learned ballet, and took up lettering, writing and gourmet cooking. She was also educated in history, economics, politics, etiquette, morals, and philosophy. Despite her initial difficulties, Cayenne was impressed by her determination and strong adherence to the moral values instilled by her father. In retrospect, he considered her one of his most remarkable students.

Vanilla deeply admired her father, idolizing him and striving to make him proud. She followed him everywhere, showcasing her skills and refined manners at public events, always mindful of upholding the Muscat family’s reputation.

The War

When war broke out, Vanilla remained by her parents’ side, growing anxious over the fate of Cayenne’s family, who had been taken prisoner by the Berman Empire’s secret service. Following the Berman Invasion and the capture of Paresia, Vanilla and her parents fled to a safehouse, where they remained for the war’s duration.

During this time, she would hear about the war from her father, learning of a mysterious, unaffiliated supertank that successfully pushed back the Berman forces from the Terre-Neuve forest to the volcanic lands of Lhassa Apso. Vanilla was particularly surprised by the news from her sister, that the formidable supertank, was being commanded by a group of mere children. She would later hear the news of the destruction of the remaining Gasco forces by the Berman, and of the emergence of a giant monster unearthed beneath Paresia. The creature, controlled by Berman General Shvein Hax, was intended to destroy Gasco. However, the children and their mysterious tank ultimately defeated both Hax and his monstrous weapon - though at great cost, leading to the destruction of Paresia and the fragmentation of Gasco’s floating island.

Vanilla would be particularly captivated by the tale of the children's leader, a young boy roughly her age. Imagining him as a noble and courageous war hero, she eagerly wished to meet him, believing he would be a great leader and an inspiration. To her, he was not just "the Hero of Gasco" - he was her hero.

Berman-Gasco armistice

Following the end of the war and the destruction of Paresia, Vanilla and her family moved to Pharaoh, the new capital of the country. There, her father continued his presidency, working alongside Jelly to rebuild the country. He established an armistice with the defeated Berman Empire and initiated peace efforts, including taking in Berman refugees, who would share their technological superiority, allowing for the development of airships that would enable travel between the now fragmented archipelago of Gasco.

It was during this period that Vanilla first saw the legendary Taranis, the mysterious supertank that had been recovered and stored in a Gasco Army warehouse. She also learned that the army had secretly captured its Berman counterpart, the Tarascus - the supertank used by the late General Hax to interface with the titanic monster, the Lost God Vanargand. The Tarascus was secretly kept in a more discreet facility nearby.

Tragedy and loss

Six months after the war’s end, while traveling in a car with her parents and Cayenne, she fell asleep peacefully - only to be jolted awake by fire and destruction. A landslide had collapsed over the road, sending all vehicles over the cliffside. The crash killed nearly everyone present.

In the flames engulfing the wreckage, she witnessed the deaths of her mother and Cayenne. Only her father, severely burned and scarred, managed to escape, carrying her barely-conscious body to safety.

Following the tragedy, Vanilla mourned her mother and mentor, burying them according to Anju rites. She clung to her father in grief.

A year of peace

Nearing the anniversary of Hax’s defeat, Shayne - through Cannelle - arranged a private meeting with the children who had operated the supertank. His primary objective was to learn more about the Taranis and Tarascus, which remained sealed due to unknown reasons. He kept the reunion discrete, omitting his part in it from cannelle's invitations, as he had taken a keen interest in the possibility of reverse-engineering them to strengthen the Gasco Army, which had previously been so easily defeated.

Vanilla, as she had always done, would accompany her father to the meeting. However, she was more enthusiastic and nervous than usual. She would finally meet her hero, Malt Marzipan.

Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2

After the Vanargand's destruction

Canonically, Vanilla and her friends succeed in defeating Cayenne and his reawakened Vanargand, earning recognition as heroes. She later visits Petite Mona to participate in the race Malt had challenged Jihl to, and despite her claims of being a poor runner, she is seen happily running alongside the shepherd.

In the credits illustrations, Vanilla appears in a black mourning gown alongside her sister, Cannelle, as they visit their parents' graves, bringing white flowers in remembrance.

According to promotional materials for Fuga 3, Vanilla appears to aid the main characters on their journey into the Berman Empire and their confrontation with the Crimson Knights. While she seems to play a supporting role, it remains unclear whether she will be a playable character.

  • Furthermore, her last name references a family of grape varieties, which are popularly used in wine and raisin production, as well as simple table grapes.
